Dog diarrhea: what to do

Diarrhea is very common in dogs and often passes in a day or two — but sometimes it is the first sign of something serious. Here is when you can watch at home and when to go to the vet.

⚡ In short

  • Mild, one-off diarrhea in a bright dog often passes in 24–48 hours.
  • Keep fresh water available; dehydration is the biggest risk.
  • Blood, black stool, vomiting, lethargy or diarrhea in an unvaccinated puppy is an emergency.
  • Don't give human anti-diarrhea medicines without your vet.

Common causes

  • Sudden food change or fatty table food
  • Eating rubbish or something off the ground
  • Intestinal parasites (Giardia, hookworms…)
  • Stress: moving, travel, boarding
  • Viral or bacterial infection — parvovirus in puppies
  • Food allergy or intolerance; pancreas, liver or kidney disease; swallowed objects

When to see a vet now

🚨Go to the vet: blood in stool or black, tarry stool · vomiting too · marked lethargy or not eating/drinking · swollen, painful belly · unvaccinated puppy (parvo risk) · senior dog or chronic illness · no improvement in 24–48 hours · possible poisoning.

Dry or sticky gums and skin that is slow to fall back when pinched can be signs of dehydration.

Home care for mild diarrhea

  1. Keep fresh water available.
  2. For 1–2 days, offer small portions of a bland diet (plain cooked chicken and rice) if your vet agrees. Never fast puppies.
  3. Return to normal food gradually over 3–5 days.
  4. Stop treats, scraps and dairy.
  5. Note colour, consistency and frequency.

Prevention

  • Change food gradually over 7–10 days.
  • Keep up with deworming and vaccines.
  • Keep bins closed and don't let your dog scavenge.
  • Avoid fatty table food — see foods toxic to dogs.
