When does the senior stage start?
- Cats: mature adult at 7–10 years, senior after 10 (AAHA/AAFP 2021).
- Dogs vary by size: roughly 8–10 years for small breeds, 7–8 for medium, 6–7 for large and 5–6 for giant breeds. The AVMA uses earlier thresholds (about 7 for small dogs).
