The problem

"Did we walk enough today?"

Short trips outside add up, but nobody knows the total. A dog that cannot burn energy may bark, chew things or become restless.

The same goes for cats: regular play helps with both weight and stress.

  • Nobody knows the total walking time
  • Lots of exercise at weekends, little on weekdays
  • Family members don't know who walked the dog
  • Cat play time is not tracked

Guide

How much exercise does my dog need?

Needs depend on breed, age, weight and health. The times below are a general starting guide for healthy adult dogs.

Energy levelExample breedsDaily activity
HighBorder Collie, Malinois, Husky, Labrador1.5–2 hours (including running and play)
MediumGolden Retriever, Beagle, Cocker Spaniel1–1.5 hours
Low / small breedMaltese, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, Pomeranian30–60 minutes
Flat-faced breedsPug, French Bulldog, Bulldog30–60 min in short, cool sessions

General guide; for dogs with heart, joint or breathing problems your vet sets the time.

Puppies and senior dogs

  • A popular rule of thumb for puppies: 5 minutes per month of age, twice a day (e.g. ~20 min for a 4-month-old). Avoid long runs and stairs.
  • For senior dogs, shorter and more frequent walks are better than one long walk.
  • Hot pavement can burn paws: if you cannot hold the back of your hand on it for 5 seconds, it is too hot.

How much play does a cat need?

For most adult cats, 2–3 sessions of 10–15 minutes of active play a day is enough. Toys that mimic hunting (wands, balls) work best; ending the game with a treat satisfies the cat.
