Temperament
British Shorthairs are calm, steady and independent. They prefer sitting beside you to being carried, cope with time alone better than many breeds and are quiet.
Daily exercise
Naturally inactive, so two active play sessions of 10–15 minutes a day matter. Wand toys and food puzzles add movement and mental stimulation.
Feeding
Very prone to weight gain; neutered British Shorthairs need few calories. Weigh food and avoid free feeding.
Example: a neutered adult British Shorthair at an ideal weight of 5 kg (11 lb) needs roughly 280 kcal a day (RER × 1.2). Work out your own pet's needs with the calorie calculator and check ideal weight with the ideal weight calculator.
Common health problems
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): regular heart checks recommended
- Obesity
- Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in some lines; genetic test available
- Gum disease
Care tips
- Brush 1–2 times a week, more when shedding
