Temperament

Persians are calm, quiet and gentle. They prefer peaceful homes to busy, noisy ones and can get stressed in hectic households.

Daily exercise

Low energy; a few short, calm play sessions a day are enough. Avoid intense play in hot weather as they can struggle to breathe.

Feeding

Kibble shaped for flat-faced cats can make eating easier.

Example: a neutered adult Persian Cat at an ideal weight of 4.5 kg (10 lb) needs roughly 260 kcal a day (RER × 1.2). Work out your own pet's needs with the calorie calculator and check ideal weight with the ideal weight calculator.

Common health problems

  • Polycystic kidney disease (PKD): common; genetic testing of breeding cats recommended
  • Brachycephalic problems: breathing difficulty, tear overflow and staining
  • Dental misalignment
  • Ringworm and skin problems from matting
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
🚨Not every Persian Cat will have these problems; the list shows conditions seen more often in the breed. If you notice symptoms, or are getting a puppy or kitten, ask about the parents' health screening and plan regular check-ups with your vet.

Care tips

  • Brush every day; mats are painful and invite skin infections
  • Wipe around the eyes daily with damp cotton
  • Trim the fur around the rear for hygiene
  • Kidney check (blood and urine) at the yearly visit
🪪Microchip your pet and keep your contact details up to date — in many countries it is required by law.

Frequently asked questions

How do I groom a Persian cat?

Brush daily with a wide-toothed comb, then a fine one. Do not force mats apart; ask a vet or groomer if needed.

Why do Persian cats' eyes water?

The flat face can narrow tear ducts. Gentle daily wiping is enough; redness, swelling or dark discharge need a vet.

How long do Persian cats live?

Usually 12–17 years. Regular kidney monitoring is important.
