Temperament

Poodles are smart, eager to learn and devoted. Easy to train and in need of mental stimulation; bored, they may bark or get into mischief.

Daily exercise

45–60 minutes of walks, play and training a day depending on size. Standard Poodles love to swim.

Feeding

Standard Poodles are deep-chested: feed two meals rather than one and avoid hard exercise right after eating (bloat risk). The calorie example is for a Miniature.

Example: a neutered adult Poodle at an ideal weight of 7 kg (15 lb) needs roughly 480 kcal a day (RER × 1.6). Work out your own pet's needs with the calorie calculator and check ideal weight with the ideal weight calculator.

Common health problems

  • Patellar luxation in Toy and Miniature
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
  • Addison's disease, especially in Standards
  • Bloat (GDV) in Standards
  • Epilepsy
🚨Not every Poodle will have these problems; the list shows conditions seen more often in the breed. If you notice symptoms, or are getting a puppy or kitten, ask about the parents' health screening and plan regular check-ups with your vet.

Care tips

  • Clip every 4–6 weeks, brush several times a week
  • Ear hair and ear cleaning
  • Brush teeth several times a week
  • Puzzle games and training
🪪Microchip your pet and keep your contact details up to date — in many countries it is required by law.

Frequently asked questions

Do Poodles shed?

Very little; the curly coat keeps growing, so clipping every 4–6 weeks and regular brushing are needed.

Are Poodles hypoallergenic?

They shed little, so some allergy sufferers cope better, but no dog is completely hypoallergenic. Spend time together first.

What is the difference between Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles?

They are three sizes of the same breed: Toy under 28 cm (11 in), Miniature 28–38 cm (11–15 in), Standard over 38 cm (15 in). Temperament is similar; health risks vary with size.
