Temperament

French Bulldogs are affectionate, playful and adaptable, and rarely bark. They dislike long separations and adapt well to apartments.

Daily exercise

30–60 minutes a day in short sessions during cool hours. Intense exercise in hot weather is life-threatening. They cannot swim; always supervise around water.

Feeding

Extra weight worsens breathing problems, so keeping an ideal weight is very important.

Example: a neutered adult French Bulldog at an ideal weight of 11 kg (24 lb) needs roughly 680 kcal a day (RER × 1.6). Work out your own pet's needs with the calorie calculator and check ideal weight with the ideal weight calculator.

Common health problems

  • Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS): snoring, noisy breathing, exercise intolerance
  • Heatstroke
  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
  • Skin-fold infections and allergies
  • Eye problems: corneal ulcers, cherry eye
🚨Not every French Bulldog will have these problems; the list shows conditions seen more often in the breed. If you notice symptoms, or are getting a puppy or kitten, ask about the parents' health screening and plan regular check-ups with your vet.

Care tips

  • Clean and dry face folds several times a week
  • In summer walk only early morning and late evening
  • Use a harness, not a collar
  • Ask your vet about risks before flights and anaesthesia
🪪Microchip your pet and keep your contact details up to date — in many countries it is required by law.

Frequently asked questions

Why do French Bulldogs snore?

Flat-faced breeds have narrowed airways (BOAS). Loud snoring, wheezing and tiring quickly mean a vet visit; surgery can help in some cases.

Can French Bulldogs handle heat?

No. They struggle to cool down. Walk in cool hours and never leave them in a car.

Can French Bulldogs swim?

Usually not; their build makes them sink. Use a life jacket and supervise near water.
