Temperament
Pugs are affectionate, playful and very attached to their owners. Good with children and rarely bark. They dislike long periods alone.
Daily exercise
30–45 minutes of short, calm walks a day. Exercise in hot, humid weather is life-threatening.
Feeding
Very prone to weight gain, and extra weight worsens breathing; ideal weight is crucial.
Example: a neutered adult Pug at an ideal weight of 7 kg (15 lb) needs roughly 480 kcal a day (RER × 1.6). Work out your own pet's needs with the calorie calculator and check ideal weight with the ideal weight calculator.
Common health problems
- Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)

- Pug dog encephalitis (NME): rare but breed-specific
- Skin-fold infections
- Obesity
Care tips
- Clean and dry face folds several times a week
- Protect the eyes; redness or watering means a same-day vet visit
- Use a harness, not a collar
- In summer walk only in cool hours
Frequently asked questions
Why do Pugs snore and wheeze?
Flat-faced breeds have narrowed airways (BOAS). Wheezing, tiring quickly or fainting need a vet check.
Why is my Pug's eye red?
Large, prominent eyes are easily injured. Redness, watering or squinting mean see a vet the same day.
How long do Pugs live?
On average 12–15 years. Ideal weight and airway health strongly affect quality of life.
