Temperament
Pomeranians are curious, cheerful and devoted. Despite their size they make good watchdogs and can bark a lot, so early training helps. Small and fragile, they need gentle play with children.
Daily exercise
30–45 minutes of short walks and indoor play is enough. Use a harness instead of a collar to protect the windpipe.
Feeding
Very small puppies can get low blood sugar if they go too long without food; feed small, regular meals.
Example: a neutered adult Pomeranian at an ideal weight of 2.5 kg (6 lb) needs roughly 220 kcal a day (RER × 1.6). Work out your own pet's needs with the calorie calculator and check ideal weight with the ideal weight calculator.
Common health problems
- Patellar luxation (kneecap slipping): skipping steps
- Tracheal collapse: goose-honk cough; use a harness
- Dental disease
- Alopecia X: symmetrical coat loss on the body
- Low blood sugar (puppies)
Care tips
- Brush 2–3 times a week; shaving can damage the coat
- Brush teeth daily or several times a week
- Trim nails monthly
- Prevent jumping from heights
Frequently asked questions
Is a Pomeranian good for apartments?
Yes, its size and moderate energy suit apartment life. Barking can be managed with early training.
Can you shave a Pomeranian?
Shaving the double coat short is not recommended and can stop it growing back properly. Light tidying is enough.
Why does my Pomeranian honk like a goose?
It can be a sign of tracheal collapse. See your vet and use a harness instead of a collar.
